The Swing Shift Shuffle is a radio program of swing, big band, jazz, boogie woogie and other popular music from the 1930's and 40's that airs every Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. (US Central Time) on WEVL 89.9 FM in Memphis, Tennessee, with a live webcast at wevl.org. In addition to the radio show, this blog is dedicated to all aspects of the Swing Era, including art, automobiles, cartoons, comics, history, movies, music, news, science, technology, and anything else that happened during that time. Duke & Duchess Of Windsor's Custom Cadillac Auctioned Today

The 1941 custom built Cadillac limousine known as "The Duchess," built for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII and Ms. Wallis Simpson), is up for auction today.  As reported by Hemmings, General Motors executive Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., a friend of the couple, had legendary GM designer Harley Earl and his team design this one-off car for the couple's trip to New York City in 1941.   This car represents the end of the custom coachbuilding era, when standard chassis were mated with bodies tailored to the owner's specifications.  It also inspired later Rolls Royce designs, and is expected to bring between $500,000 and $800,000.
